Overcoming Gaps in Cancer Screening: President’s Cancer Panel Report
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, studies from the National Cancer Institute have indicated that postponed and canceled cancer screening and treatment appointments will cause a surplus of thousands of cancer-related deaths in the upcoming years. The pandemic may intensify already established disparities in cancer screening and outcomes as a whole by race/ethnicity, geography, income, and insurance standing.
The 2020-2021 President’s Cancer Panel focused on cancer screening and met with stakeholders including healthcare providers, patients, advocates, researchers, and insurers, which affirmed the need for more effective, accessible, and equitable cancer screening for all Americans. The panel highlighted barriers to screening and follow-up care, the need for communication campaigns, how to improve patient access, and the need for medical teams to collaborate to work more effectively.
